The Center for Urban and Regional Analysis (CURA) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has provided a broad range of services compiling data and associated analysis for the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development’s Virginia Main Street Program. In 2015, CURA facilitated a study entitled “Thirty Years of Impact: How the Main Street program has revitalized Virginia communities ,” which offered an overview of public and private investment in Virginia’s 25 designated Main Street communities. The result of this study has been a source of assistance to our local programs with needed data to illustrate the value in dollars of their respective programs, as well as to make recommendations for improvements to products and services.
Center for Urban and Regional analysis (CURA) at Virginia Commonwealth University
CURA @ VCU – the Center for Urban & Regional Analysis – specializes in downtown and community planning and development, impact analysis, and information systems.
Planning & Development: Our community-based research and analyses help historic Main Street districts position themselves to realize their economic potential, through sensitive adaptive reuse, district expansion, and creative linkages with other centers and assets in the region.
Impact Analysis: We document the social, economic, land-value, and fiscal impacts of Main Street’s work on the community and region, demonstrating to stakeholders how Main Street leverages private and public investment dollars.
Information Systems: We help Main Streets and other community organizations set up, collect and use information, so they can more easily demonstrate the impacts of their work through reports and presentations to public and private investors and other stakeholders.
Our professional team has many years of experience in downtown development and planning, economic analysis, community design, information systems and geo-spatial analysis. We have served scores of downtowns, retail corridors and Main Street communities.
