National Trust for Historic Preservation, Office of Diversity Initiatives
![]()
Tanya Bowers came on as the Director for Diversity at the National Trust for Historic Preservation in January 2009. For nearly thirteen years Tanya has been a diversity practitioner and a consultant in organizational development designing programs and leading workshops in diversity training, strategic planning, leadership development, and teambuilding. Tanya received her Master’s Degree in Psychology with an Applied Community Psychology specialization from Antioch University Los Angeles. In addition to graduating with honors from Wesleyan University as an interdisciplinary University Major in Urban Studies, Tanya completed programs at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation, Columbia Business School's Institute for Not-for-Profit Management, and North Carolina’s Outward Bound School.
Tanya began her career working in public policy, urban planning, and historic preservation in New York City government with the Parks Department and the Manhattan Borough President’s Office. She then became certified in diversity training and has since become affiliated with various human relations organizations and management-consulting firms where her clients included corporations, educational institutions, government and law enforcement agencies, and community groups. Along the way she added leadership development, teambuilding, and wilderness/adventure education to her repertoire. As a diversity practitioner and a consultant in organizational development, Tanya has designed programs and led diversity training, strategic planning, leadership development, and teambuilding sessions.
Through the Office of Diversity Initiatives, Tanya aids the National Trust in engaging America’s diverse communities in preserving and sharing the stories and places that matter to them. This work seeks to enrich historic preservation by embracing the full range of American cultural experiences.
Tanya was first introduced to the Main Street Center at the Chicago National Main Streets Conference. She then served as a consultant covering Organization as a part of a Main Street Resource Team Visit in East Stuart, Florida. She has also spoken and facilitated workshops on engaging diverse audiences at the Iowa Downtown and Delaware Small Business Summits.
