Storefont was created by historic preservationist and economic development expert, Darrek D. Orwig. After years of working in the downtown revitalization field, Darrek saw how acquiring affordable and engaging signage was a burden for a number of business owners. To assist entrepreneurs, he extensively studied historic sign painting manuals dating from the 1840s to the 1920s and began recreating fonts that were specifically designed for storefronts in downtowns. The result are innovative sign kits that provide an economical way to increase unique and bespoke signage in downtowns that complements historic buildings, stands out to customers, and adds to a neighborhood’s sense of place.

In addition to sign kits, Storefont also provides technical assistance on effective and affordable downtown signage to business owners, prospective entrepreneurs, and Main Street organization leadership. Storefont’s workshops provide a greater understanding as to how signage was used in historic downtowns, and how these practices can be successfully implemented today in walkable mixed-use neighborhoods. Workshops can be tailored depending on the needs of the hosting downtown organization, and the programs are encouraged to include hands-on sign creation for pre-selected businesses through examples of Storefont sign kits. Programs can also be developed for municipal historic preservation commissions to assist with determining ordinances on sign fonts, colors, and design.

Neighborhoods with unique historic architecture and signage draw independent local businesses that then attract customers looking for experience-driven shopping and dining. This is why Storefont was created; sometimes stepping back, is the way to step forward.
